Review: The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks

At first, I wondered whether I'd picked up a young adult novel by mistake. Lots of underprivileged kids and easy-to-read, simple narrative, a cover that didn't really appeal to me personally - yet there was something that kept me reading and I'm so glad it did. This novel picked up the pace quickly, and I was soon hooked. It's exciting, full of action but interesting characters too, the world is wonderfully realised, the use of magic imaginative, the fight scenes thrilling... There's a fair amount of blood, gore and other nasty things, but not just for the sake of it - it seems realistic, given the world the characters live in. Oh, and I soon realised that 'underprivileged' was a distinct understatement. This book wouldn't be a good choice for the young or over-sensitive, but if you like fantasy, assassins or just a good story, try this! I'll be passing on my copy to everyone I know (and then demanding it back).
I finished reading this book today but have already started the sequel, and the third in the trilogy is coming out in December so that's going on my Christmas list. I'm excited at having found a new fantasy author, and hope he keeps writing for a long, long time!
